Coxhoe Club and Durham Miners gala
The Coxhoe Club concert on the
Friday night was again a great experience, with the audience starting to arrive
over an hour before playing started. The varied programme included Rob performing
the Post Horn Galop with five members of the audience 'invited' up with the
band to unknowingly act as the Hunt Pack. The band were away just before midnight.........
......and were back at the club for 0830 Saturday. The band played in the
usuual spot before marchiung with the banner through Coxhoe. After boarding
the bus, the Band were dropped at the New Inn for the march into Durham. This
years 'party piece' for the County was 'A Pencil Full of Lead'. The band then
moved off towards the showground. This year, bands were being dispersed at
the top due to overcrowding on the path into the showground.
The day was nice and sunny until
waiting for the bus back to Coxhoe, when everyone got soaked. Back at Coxhoe
tea was provided by the Club.
Thanks once again to the Club for inviting us to play. The Band had a very
enjoyable time.
Thank you also to our friends who filled the ranks on both the Friday and Saturday.

Karen Heaviside ~ 40 Years Celebration Party
Last night Marske Silver held a surprise party for Karen Heaviside. Karen has been with Marske for 40 years, joining the band in 1970. Marske had kindly invited both North Skelton and Billingham Bands to join in the celebration.
Karen was totally unaware of
the event, thinking she was being taken for an Indian meal with her partner,
Tony, and two friends.
There were lots of photos of Karen at various points in her Banding career,
plus earlier appearances as Miss Junior Pontins. These were projected on to
the wall and also given to Karen in a presentation book by Chris Robertson,
Chairman of Marske Band. Karen also received (amongst other items) a framed
certificate from the Durham Brass Band Association and a framed letter of
congratulation from Buckingham Palace.
Karen has frequently helped North Skelton band in it's various guises over
the years. We would like to add our congratulations and thanks to her, and
also to thank Marske for the kind invitation to join in their celebrations.
A good time was had by all.

Photo Album for the Northern Area 2010
The gremlin affecting this album has been rectified and it is now available on the Photos Link on the left. The album uploaded on 28th March could not be seen for some obscure reason. The standard IT solution of switching it off and switching it on again appears to have worked :-) The pictures are of the band waiting to go on and the minor interlude outside after the fire alarm had gone off. Thanks to Clare Avery for these.
The other albums that are temporarily unavailable will be put back online in the not too distant future
North Skelton and Langbaurgh Contest Results
New website added to the Links Page which shows our contest results since 2000.

Change in Conductors
The Band would like to wish Tim Oldroyd 'good luck' for the future. Tim has decided to pursue interests elsewhere and has left North Skelton. Over the many years that Tim has been associated with both Langbaurgh Brass and the 'new' North Skelton Band, he has lead us to many contest victories. Tims concert programmes were always littered with challenging pieces. His last concert with the Band was at Saltburn Community centre.
Tims position in the middle of the band has been filled by Rob Illsley. Rob took the band to the Ripon Entertainments contest in May, report to follow. Robs first concert with the Band will be at Coxhoe as part of the Durham Miners Gala (See Engagements Page).

Northern Regional Contest Results
Rehearsal at Willow Road Community Centre in the morning, with tea and biccies (very civilised). North Skelton drew second and the fire alarm went off in the Dolphin Centre as we were getting ready to register. So all out into the street where a lone fire engine turned up. After a short while the contest got under way in the usual smoke free atmosphere.
The Band came off stage feeling we'd done the biz and got lots of positive comments. Unfortunately Kevin Wadsworth was sadly not of the same opinion and placed us fourth.
Many Congratulations to Ferryhill and York R.I. for qualifying for the National Finals at Harrogate in September. Good luck to both groups. We hope you bring a trophy back to the North.
However, every cloud etc....... totting the points up after the contest it looks like North Skelton should be competing in the Second Section from January 2011. Official notification will come along in due course.
