Clare and Richard are leaving :-(
The Band have said goodbye to two of our stalwarts. Clare and Richard are moving to Guernsey and we would like to wish them both 'Good Luck' in their new life in the far south. They have already visited the local band on the island for a rehearsal, so will be carrying on Banding. From the Guernsey Concert Bands website it looks like Clare and Richard could be back in Yorkshire for the Whit Friday marches....
Both Clare and Richard have been with the Band for many years. Clare has kindly provided a short history of their involvement.
Clare started playing in 1977 on cornet in North Skelton learners band. Sometime between then and 1981 the bandmaster George Robinson (Paul Robinsons uncle) died and a fresh faced young horn player called Nigel Barnes took the baton. In 1981 Clare started playing the horn. Between then and 1988 Nigel developed the band to become good enough to compete in the fourth section. The Bands first proper contest was at the Durham League in January 1988. We were no longer just a Junior Band for North Skelton Senior Band.
Since then the Band has been up and down the sections, not quite reaching the Championship, with various conductors along the way. From October 1989 to June 1992 Clare was at Lancaster University (played with Morecambe Band). Between July 1996 and June 1998 she was at the College of Air Traffic Control in Bournemouth (played with Poole Borough Band). With the exception of these minor excursions, Clare has been in our Band all of the time.
Richard joined the Band officially for the National Finals in Dundee in September 2003. However he had been helping the band out at various concerts in the summer of that year. Before that he played briefly with Aunt Bessies Band. Previously he had played with the Scarborough Salvation Army Band, where he started playing cornet in 1984, leaving in the summer of 2003. He started with North Skelton Band on front bench cornet working his way up to principal, but after a few years at that he decided to switch to the Flugel and has enjoyed it much more.
Photos of their Leaving "Do" can be found on the Photos link to the left.
